Gordon Morris

6-8th Grade Teacher

Bio

My name is Gordon Morris and I’m excited to join the Calvary Christian Staff as a middle school language arts and reading teacher. I met my beautiful wife at Mount Mercy University, and we will be married for twenty years this July of 2024. We have five children together whose ages range from three to twelve and all who will all be attending Calvary Christian Academy this upcoming school year.

My family and I currently attend Antioch Christian Church in Marion and have been a part of the church family since 2015. I’m heavily involved in the men’s ministry at Antioch and am excited to be a part of the growth of that outreach. My children are involved with the youth service on Sundays and love attending their youth camp each summer.

I’m originally from the Chicago suburbs and came to Cedar Rapids to attend Mount Mercy University. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with endorsements in middle school, language arts, and social studies. My short-term goal is to earn a master’s degree in educational administration with the long-term goal of entering an administrative role within Calvary Christian as the school grows.

After we graduated, my wife and I married and moved to Arizona to start our careers. We spent 10 years there where I taught 6th grade language arts and social studies. I spent my first seven years teaching in an underprivileged school district in Coolidge, AZ and then my last three years in the more affluent Higley Unified School District outside of Gilbert, AZ. Both experiences were valuable in the way they shaped me as a man and as an educator.

After we started our family, we decided to move back to Iowa, and I changed careers to allow my wife to stay at home to raise our children. I spent over eight years in the transportation industry in many different roles including safety and operations. I was able to utilize many of the skills I had developed as a teacher and translate them into successful roles in management within the transportation industry.

Now that our children are school age, my wife has gone back to work full time as a nurse. After much prayer I felt as though God was calling me back to the original purpose he had for me, and that was as an educator and mentor to children. Not being happy with the current direction and rhetoric being spread within the public-school sector, I felt that teaching in an environment that promoted my faith was important. I know that God has led me to Calvary Christian to fulfill these purposes. I’m very excited to start my teaching journey again at Calvary Christian.

Through this journey I feel God speaking to me and finding encouragement in Mark 4:1-13 where Jesus teaches the parable the farmer scattering seed. I find this message powerful as an educator because I feel it is vital to provide good soil for children to grow in the faith in God and in Christ as their Savior. As Christians we are called to love God, love people, and make disciples, and I look forward to helping grow the next generation of disciple makers at Calvary Christian.
